Network Cameras Introduction

Network Cameras are CCTV cameras that have web servers embedded inside them so that the video can be transmitted over a computer network. This allows video to be viewed and recorded on any PC on the network or the Internet.

Network Surveillance Cameras have been available for some time but were previously expensive and the technology was young. As network surveillance technology has progressed, the price has come down and is now comparable in cost with analogue CCTV cameras.

The main benefit of Network Cameras are that they can be easy to install using single cable systems such as Cat5 network cable and can utilise much of the cabling systems in place inside buildings making installation potentially cheaper. Network cameras can also provide HD Megapixel video returning High Definition video was was previously unattainable with analogue cameras. Another benefit is the use of WiFi to create Wireless Network Cameras that produce interferrence free video over greater distances than analogue cameras could.

A popular benefit with Network cameras is remote access over the Internet allowing live CCTV from any PC in the world allowing the user to react in real time by viewing live images, recording video and utilising services such as 2 way audio to communicate with the remote site. Even more popular is the ability to view network cameras from any location in the world on mobile phones including GPRS and 3G mobile phones.

This Blog will look at the range of network cameras from BiKal IP CCTV and will explore the benefits and drawbacks of things like MPEG4 and H.264 video compression, CCD vs CMOS image sensors to bandwidth and lighting considerations.
